TONY Smith has called for unity at Warrington Wolves as they seek to kickstart their Super League season.

The Wire go into tonight’s clash with Leigh Centurions looking to avoid a fifth straight league defeat and move off the bottom of the table.

Some fans have expressed their frustrations with Wolves’ performances but Smith had a message for the primrose and blue army.

“For the people who are frustrated, we understand that but it’s about unity at the moment and getting behind your team. That can make the difference,” he said.

“The majority of our support, whether results are going our way or not, know that things will be alright.

“We’re as frustrated as some of our fans are but it’s not through lack of trying. Sometimes you can be guilty of trying too hard and trying in the wrong way.

“Some of that is trying to do things alone rather than as a unit. We’re working those things through but we have to take the good with the bad.

“One of the things that makes me proud of the people that support this club is that they’ve had some tough times in past years but they stick with their team. That’s what makes a true supporter.

“We’re going through a tough time at the moment in terms of results, but that is when you stick together.”

The Wire will be hoping to stop Leigh recording a third home victory of the season and Smith believes they are a force to be reckoned with on their return to Super League.

The Wolves boss also says his side will have to keep an eye on ex-Wire Micky Higham, the 36-year-old Leigh skipper who won three Challenge Cup titles during his time at The Halliwell Jones Stadium.

“They’ve improved each week, their defence has improved and they are handling it really well,” Smith said.

“We’ll keep an eye out for Micky and some of his dummy-half runs. He’ll be trying hard to get a try against us so we need to be squeaky clean.

“Our marker play needs to be good enough to keep him quiet.”
