ONE thing Wolves’ latest signing cannot be said to lack is experience.

Kevin Brown arrives at The Halliwell Jones Stadium with 347 career appearances under his belt, including five England caps.

During that time, he has crossed for 134 tries, kicked one goal and two drop goals for a career points total of 540 points.

The 32-year-old honed his rugby skills at several clubs around his native St Helens, turning out for Thatto Heath, Haydock Warriors, Pilkington Recs and Blackbrook before joining Wigan’s academy in 2002.

A shoulder injury to Hull FC’s Kirk Yeaman gave him the chance for international honours in the same year and he was called up to the England Academy squad to face the Australian Schoolboys.

He featured in the team’s iconic series victory Down Under under the tutelage of Wire legend Mike Gregory, who was the England Academy coach at the time.

Brown’s form caught the eye of Wigan coach Stuart Raper, who called him up to the Warriors senior squad for the 2003 season.

He made sporadic appearances before becoming a regular feature in the Wigan centres during the 2004 season, earning a contract extension until the end of the following year.

More regular appearances under Ian Millward and another contract followed until he moved on loan to Huddersfield late in the 2006 season, a move that would become permanent the following year.

His form in his first full season with the Giants prompted the then-Great Britain coach Tony Smith to hand him a call up to the squad for a Test match against France, although he did not make the final cut.

Brown started at stand-off for the Giants in their Challenge Cup Final defeat to Wolves in 2009 before making his England debut the following year in a Test match against France.

The game preceded the Four Nations tournament in Australia and New Zealand and Brown went on to play in games against the Kiwis and Papa New Guinea.

Brown was an influential figure in a Huddersfield side that threatened the top of the league before leaving the club for Widnes ahead of the 2013 season.

He proved to be the hub around which a largely successful Vikings team was built and, after two years in which the team finished in 10th and eighth respectively, Brown was made club captain for the 2015 season having made the Super League Dream Team in 2014.

In the revamped “Super 8s” system, Brown’s side failed to make the top eight but consolidated their Super League place in the Middle 8s before he had his most successful season in a Widnes shirt to date in 2016.

They led the table heading into the Easter fixtures, with Brown key to some exciting passages of play, and they finished well inside the top eight despite a mid-season dip in form.

Brown’s contributions led to new England coach Wayne Bennett ending his six-year international exile and he marked his return to the side with a try off the bench in the Test match victory over France in Avignon.

He started at stand-off in the Four Nations game against Australia as Bennett continued to tinker with his half-back options, but he could not influence proceedings enough to stop the Kangaroos winning 36-18.

Now, Brown embarks on the latest, and possibly final chapter of his career with The Wire looking to win his first ever trophy. Will he ever get a better chance?
