WARRINGTON Wolves head to Newcastle having got the better of Sunday’s opponents St Helens in recent Magic Weekend meetings.

Two tries each for Joel Monaghan and Rhys Evans in Manchester last year helped Wolves on their way to a 41-24 win, with Gene Ormsby, Chris Hill, Ryan Atkins and Matty Russell also crossing.

A year earlier, again at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium, Tony Smith’s side romped to 48-22 success with Chris Riley and Trent Waterhouse enjoying try doubles, while Atkins, Lee Briers, Simon Grix and Adrian Morley added to Saints’ woes.

In fact, Saints are without a win in a Magic Weekend fixture since thumping Hull KR 54-0 at Murrayfield in 2010.

But Newcastle’s St James’ Park holds unheralded territory for both, and Keiron Cunningham’s side head into the game having already beaten Warrington this season.

Wolves went down 32-24 at Langtree Park in March, Daryl Clark, Micky Higham, Kevin Penny and Hill tries proving too little on the day.

However Saints have lost five of their nine Super League games since, but did beat Hull FC 17-10 at the KC Stadium last time out.

Cunningham expects captain Jon Wilkin to be back for Sunday’s fixture, as well as centre Mark Percival.
