Post-match press conference:

Tony Smith: “We’re heading in the right sort of direction, that’s for sure, and it takes good performances to beat us.

“We’re much more approved than a few weeks ago I’d say.

"We’ll go away and improve. The effort wasn’t anything we could criticise.

“We produce some of the best games between us, at the moment we’re coming out on the wrong side.

“Both coaches will probably be looking for some improvements from their defence through the game.”

tangerinewire: Heading in the "Right Direction" ? We are plummeting down the table. We were beaten by a poor Wigan side, our defence was soft. A positive is Patterson who looks like the real deal and combined well with his fellow youngsters.

Sameoldsameold: What a ridiculous comment by Tony Smith , when you've lost 5 out of the last 6 games, yes Wigan were good, but some of our half hearted attempts at tackling were woeful. So if he thinks we are heading in the right direction , I'm looking forward to the championship next year .

Dr Julian Karswell: This game encapsulates everything that's wrong with Super League at the moment. Wigan v Warrington clashes have nearly always been blood and thunder affairs between two star-packed sides, putting their bodies on the line in front of full stadiums. Here we had a Thursday night match played in front of little over 14,000, with two ordinary sides packed with kids (talented kids, but kids all the same), producing what Shaun Wane rightly called a game that was more like tick and pass at times. Sorry, but talk of it being a thriller and the game of the season only emphasises what a poor quality product we have at the moment. Saints are champions with a team that in previous years would have struggled to make the top five. The standard of the sport is slipping quite dramatically and for that I largely blame Sky TV and the game's administrators.
