WARRINGTON Wolves’ attack was ‘boring’ in the defeat to rivals Widnes Vikings, but Tony Smith insists his side will learn and improve from it.

The defeat brought Wolves’ 10-game winning run to an end and they failed to score a point in the first-half.

But Smith commended Vikings’ performance and believes his side can bounce back from the defeat.

“We were off our best by a long way, having said that I don’t want to take too much away from Widnes,” he said.

“I didn’t think there was too much between the two teams except Widnes took their chances and the opportunities that arose.

“I don’t think we created enough, particularly that first half I thought we were boring the way we attacked and very unlike us.

“We didn’t ask enough questions of our opponents and our opponents were good. Second half I thought we tried a bit harder and created a little bit more.

“I’d like to think my team will respond to that like they usually do, we’ll go away and work a bit harder. We’ll have a bit longer to work this week to fix things up and I’d like to think we’ll learn lots from it.

“We accept defeat at our place, I know lots of clubs don’t and won’t accept it. We do, we learn from it, improve from it and get stronger from it and learn lessons from it so we’ll do that again this week.”

Wolves’ head of coaching and rugby also admits that his side were due an off-day and accepted the defeat.

“We’d just get some pressure on them and we’d relieve that pressure ourselves, I thought Widnes defended really well, particularly their goal line,” added Smith.

“I thought our attack on their goal line was pretty average and we’ll have to do some extra work this next week coming.

“We didn’t deserve to win, our opponents were better than us tonight, they out-enthused us at crucial times.

“I just concentrate on trying to get my team to play well and most weeks we play pretty good stuff, my boys are entitled to have a day were things don’t go our way.

“We accept that and we’ll learn from it, so well done to Widnes.”

Couldn't have put it better myself, Widnes deserved it probably the best they have played for awhile, we were at our most disorganised for awhile but we can do a lot better.

Very disappointing after the recent run of form. Nobody stood out and took the game to Widnes. They wanted it more and looked much more determined and stronger as well as full of ideas. No doubt the short turn for us did not help and probably we took a few liberties with team selection which was surprising with a place at the top of the league at stake ! Hope this produces the proverbial kick up the backside before the cup semi.

I thought for most of the first half we looked to be running with lead in our boots & had trouble getting to our correct field positions at times.
Maybe a combination of playing on a strange i pitch & the stifling heat didn't help matters.

I agree with realistic-why rest Harrison and Monaghan for Widnes and play them against London. I hope boring does not mean its time to drop OBrien again, I thought he played well as did Atkins. Monaghan is a leader who has shown up a few times this season.
Eddie Hemmings is taking his bias too far-the Widnes try that wasnt is the rub of the green and the 'error' in Wires favour was a disgrace and the referree a joke. After the Huddersfield'oh no!:' last year I thought he may have realised his bias was shining through.
Anyway compared to the 'footy show' boots n all is a non starter.

Absolutely agree with your comment regarding G.O.B
By far the best tactical kicker we have.. My fear too being his non-selection once Myler is fit. Maybe his time will come when Mick Monaghan hangs up his boots. Our loss if he were to be tempted elsewhere.
Another thing, I am still unsure about our new fullback... He doesn't seem to be able read the game and anticipate field position like Hodgson could. Everything with Matty Russell is a last ditch scrambling effort. He messed up on 3 separate occasions on friday. For a fullback we need someone with safe hands and a steady nerve. These qualities for me are yet to be seen..

I think ,for a few seasons at least, it will be hard for anyone to fill Brett Hodgson's boots.

Now that I'm over the disappointment and able to be more rational all in all apart from the other blip Bradford, we have performed very well with a big mix of very good young players covering for all the experienced players out with long term injuries, I feel we can include Russell in the young not too experienced bracket this being his first ever full season, it's now about getting the best team ready for when it matters, under the present set of circumstances we can't go flat out all the time although I would have liked to have seen some better organisation, coordination and leadership.
We can see the other teams already gearing themselves for just that point in time following their own blips, we along with three other teams have a semi final and hopefully for the wire a final to fit in between now and October, keep the faith the team will give it their best.

I think that you can’t be too cynical over Russell yes he did have a mare but up until this game I think he’s been quite consistent and is gelling well in the squad. We were our own worst nightmare at times forcing offloads on tackle one and not quick enough around the ruck and poor completion. Hats off to Dennis Betts and Widnes they were hungrier and were the better team on the day.
