TONY Smith will not get carried away by Warrington Wolves’ biggest win of the season but praised the role of four-try man Joel Monaghan.

The club’s head of coaching and rugby watched his side put 72 points on in the process of relegating London Broncos at The Halliwell Jones Stadium.

But Smith insists it was not Wolves’ best performance of the season and that they had to stay disciplined throughout.

“I thought we were well disciplined for most of it,” he said. “It could have got out of hand in terms of throwing the ball around willy-nilly, so I thought we had to be disciplined.

“That was probably led up by Joel, Joel had some fantastic touches and finished off some great plays but I thought he set the example by not overdoing things.

“That really would have hampered us if we had overdone it with a lack of control, that showed good self-discipline and team discipline and they bought into that and did a good job.

“I wouldn’t say was our best performance of the season overall, it was our best score line but you’ve got to take into account the opposition that we played against.”

The 72-12 success makes it 10 wins on the bounce in all competitions for Wolves, who handed a debut to 18-year-old Toby King at centre.

“We certainly won’t get carried away,” added Smith. “We’re on good form and we’ve got some young people who are getting very good experience, and some more senior players who are leading them well.

“We’ve got some senior people who will be returning from injury soon to add to our depth, it’s been tested a bit recently.

“George (King) has got two up on him but Toby did a good job there, it just shows we’ve got some fantastic young talent coming through and he didn’t look out of place at all.

“It was a nice taster for him, he had his 18th birthday on Wednesday, so was a nice birthday present for him and the King family to celebrate.

“Three games between the two of them in the last two weeks, so we like the brother thing here. A lot of brothers have come through the system.

“It must be part of our recruitment policy I think, once you find one sign the other one as well – it’s paying off so far.”
