LEE Briers is playing down his young charge’s win over Leeds Rhinos by insisting it will not be the making of their season.

Warrington Wolves under 19s enjoyed a 34-20 success at The Halliwell Jones Stadium on Friday, sending them two points clear of their opponents at the league summit.

But, having lost to Rhinos earlier in the season, Briers believes there is still work to do.

“We are gradually building in the right direction,” he said. “We said after the loss at Leeds that it wouldn’t make or break our season and this is exactly the same after this win.

“The opening half an hour was the best we have played this season and we totally dominated a really strong Leeds side.

“We knew that they would have a purple patch at some stage which they duly did, playing some great rugby, but I thought that the way we responded was a credit to the full team.

“We will get to enjoy this but then we will look forward to preparing well for the visit of Hull KR next Friday evening, kick off 7.30pm at Victoria Park Arena.”

Fellow coach Danny Fullerton added: “I was really impressed with the performance; the attitude throughout was spot on.

“The preparation pre-game, in the warm-up and then during the match was first class and it shows the increasing maturity within the squad.

“In the last few minutes of the game the Rhinos had five consecutive sets on our line and the way the lads defended was a credit to their professionalism and will stand them in good stead for the games coming up.

“The enjoyment that they are all getting from working with each other is great to see and that is showing in their performances.

“George King and Tom Walker were immense in the front row, both playing over an hour and second row pair Joe Philbin and Sam Wilde both put in 80-minute performances and were a constant menace to the Leeds defence.

“It wasn’t a faultless display but we know the areas that we can improve in and we will be doing that this week.”
