Warrington Wolves' rising star Glenn Riley happy to pledge his future to club
PROP forward Glenn Riley is backing himself for a big year in 2014.
Fresh from signing a contract that keeps him in primrose and blue until November 2016, the 20-year-old is poised to take up the mantle of departing stars Adrian Morley, Garreth Carvell and Mike Cooper in Wolves’ pack.
They may be big shoes to step into, but both Riley and his coach Tony Smith are confident that the Cumbrian has the feet to fill them.
“He’s not just one for the future, I think Glenn is one for the present,” said Smith.
“He is an enormous man and he has great mobility and agility for such a big guy.
“Glenn has many attributes and I am a big fan of his. He has been terrific for us this year already.
“I actually think he is ready now, but he has a few seasoned campaigners in front of him and he is one of the boys who will benefit from a few of those guys moving on.”
The former Wath Brow Hornets junior has played six games already this season, after having impressed Smith during his senior debut against Keighley Cougars in April.
But he agrees with his coach that 2014 should be his breakthrough year.
“I think next season is a massive one for me,” he said.
“There are a lot of experienced heads moving on and he will be looking for some of us younger ones to make that step up and make their mark.
“I’m excited to see what the next few years will bring. We have a good group of younger guys stepping through and I’m happy to be a part of that.”
Wolves will be happy to have him, too, considering the interest the young forward received from the Australian NRL competition – particularly the NZ Warriors – in recent months.
But the Whitehaven lad only had eyes for Warrington, the club he joined after being scouted from an England under 18s game a few years ago.
“I am over the moon to sign a new deal,” he said.
“The general atmosphere and the whole set-up of the club makes you want to stay.
“The facilities are top notch, the staff are excellent and we have a really good bunch of lads. I am very happy here.”
