WOLVES’ five-match unbeaten run is over.

Hull tonight became only the second side to record victory over Wolves at The Halliwell Jones Stadium this season.

They did so with four unanswered tries after Wolves had extended their half-time lead to 16-6 with a 47th minute try.

The points were finally settled with a super solo chip and chase from England winger Tom Briscoe with the final play of the game in a breathless encounter.

After Hull had pulled it back to 16-16, albeit with dubious efforts that included an obstruction in one try and a forward pass in the next, Wolves lacked the penetration to hit back.

They looked a beaten side as they resorted to high kicks from the boot of Lee Briers but it was not to be their night against a much-improved Hull side to the one they defeated 24-10 at the KC Stadium in February.

The opening arm wrestle was the toughest Wolves have faced for some time.

Tom Lineham thought he had put Hull ahead in the ninth minute but video referee Ban Thaler pulled play back for an obstruction on Ryan Atkins as he had tried to collect Trent Waterhouse’s loose offload.

And then Wolves looked set to score after a lovely Waterhouse behind-the-man pass allowed Atkins to burn away but his pass was dropped by Chris Riley as Lineham closed in to make a last-gasp attempt at stopping the potential try.

It was fast-paced and brutal with the strength of both teams’ defences forcing numerous handling errors in an end-to-end battle.

It took 30 minutes for the deadlock to be broken and, when it was, Briers was the architect.

His little grubber kick behind the defensive line was pounced on by Simon Grix, beating both Joel Monaghan and Tom Briscoe to the touch.

Briers, making his first start since the draw at Wigan in round two, added the conversion to give Wolves a hard-earned lead.

Just like buses, you wait ages for one and then three come at once with Joel Monaghan bagging his 17th try of the season on the next set to put Wolves 10-0 to the good.

The groundwork was done with a sneaky slipped pass from former Hull favourite Garreth Carvell sending Briers clear.

He handed on to half back partner Richie Myler who stepped two covering defenders before dinking the ball over the top of his England teammate Tom Briscoe for Joel Monaghan to regather and cross at the second attempt after being half-stopped.

Then it was Hull’s turn.

Carvell and Myler did well to bring Richard Whiting to the ground inches from the try line and Wolves were relieved when the ball slipped loose and Chris Riley scooped up.

But the ball was poked from Mike Cooper’s grasp in a three-man tackle and Hull scored from the possession.

Ben Crooks chanced a first-tackle kick behind a zig-zag Wolves defence but it was deflected into Aaron Heremaia’s path. The replacement hooker tried another kick and it fell perfectly for Briscoe to touch down close to the posts and Daniel Holdsworth converted for 10-6 after 39 minutes.

First try of the second half was going to be important and Wolves struck after 47 minutes.

A well-flighted kick from Myler was spot on for Atkins to win the battle in the air with Lineham and fall over the line. Briers converted and it was 16-6.

But there was plenty of life left in Hull.

They responded in the 52nd minute when Lineham powered over in the corner in Chris Riley’s attempted tackle, with an obstruction by Andy Lynch on Briers earlier in the move not given by video ref Thaler. Holdsworth was wide with the boot to leave a six-points difference.

A penalty conceded for holding down by Chris Hill proved costly when the visitors levelled matters in the 59th minute.

It was a controversial score, though, with Richard Horne’s pass to the angled run of Crooks looking a yard forward and although Stefan Ratchford was able to hold up the son of former Great Britain prop Lee he was able to offload to the supporting Whiting to cross. Holdsworth converted.

Wolves were handed a penalty goal attempt on 66 minutes, 20 metres out, but Briers backed his men to go for a try instead and came up empty handed.

Hull took the lead for the first time after they were gifted the ball from an Atkins fumble deep inside his own territory.

Whiting bagged his second try when he crashed on to a short ball from Horne and Holdsworth’s conversion made it 22-16 after 72 minutes.

Briscoe’s chip and chase finish, beating Ben Currie to the touch down, wrapped up Hull’s first win against Wolves in six attempts.
