Warrington 21 Firwood Waterloo 10

WARRINGTON leapfrogged their opponents in the North One West table as they rich vein of form continued.

Saturday’s victory at Walton Lea Road was their fifth in their past six league games and moved them up to fifth in the standings.

Ben Hockenhull kicked two early penalties, either side of a Scott Robson try in the corner for the visitors, to give Andy Roberts’ side a one-point lead and they would not fall behind again for the remainder of the contest.

Warrington continued to apply the pressure and, after a Firwood player was sent to the sin bin, Hockenhull booted his side into a 9-5 lead at the break.

For all their pressure, the hosts were yet to force their way over the try line, but they breached the dam after the interval.

After Kieron Hughes had handed him the ball, Tom Arnold showed his pace to scorch away from the defence and twist away from the full-back to score between the posts, with Hockenhull on target with the conversion.

With the luxury of an 11-point cushion, Warrington continued to throw caution to the wind and were rewarded when, after two solid forward phases, the backs created space for Nathan Beesley to cross on the left wing.

Although the visitors had the final say with an unconverted try in the final minute, Warrington were left to celebrate a richly deserved victory.

They welcome Wilmslow, the team directly above them in the table, to Walton Lea Road on Saturday, kick off 2.15pm.
