Warrington 38 Altrincham Kersal 3

A SUPERB display of kicking from Tom Wood inspired Warrington to their fourth bonus-point victory of the season on Saturday.

Andy Roberts’ side ran in six tries at Walton Lea Road, with Wood’s kicks directly responsible for two of them, as they moved up to fifth in the North One West table.

“Given the atrocious weather, we played some very good rugby,” Roberts said.

“Our defence prevented Altrincham from crossing our line and our attack was clinical in its finishing.”

It did not take Warrington long to open the scoring, with the ball being spread quickly across the field to put Nathan Beesley over in the corner.

Despite heavy Warrington pressure, it was the visitors who scored next thanks to a penalty kick from the halfway line, but that was as good as it got for them.

Paul Thompson scurried over after spotting a gap in the Altrincham defence before namesake Jamie was alert to score in the corner from a quick-tap penalty.

Warrington’s crucial fourth try came immediately after the restart after Thompson and Tom Arnold gained good ground on a kick return before the latter handed on to Sean Callendar, who crossed in the corner.

With the game all but won, the hosts started to express themselves and Wood’s kicking from hand came to the fore.

One such chip over the defence was hunted down by Kieron Hughes and he won the foot race to the line.

Wood then collected his own kick to put the seal on an impressive Warrington performance.

Roberts’ side welcome Firwood Waterloo, the side directly above them in the table, to Walton Lea Road on Saturday, kick off 3pm.

JAYESH Kerai’s winner meant Warrington took the spoils in South Cheshire on Saturday.

The visitors flew out of the blocks and took the initiative early, with Ian Fraser-Sinclair finishing off a nice move to give them the lead.

Mark Dixon then produced a moment of magic, collecting his own kick before side-stepping two players and eventually muscling over, with Ben Dixon converting.

However, the hosts hit back with tries either side of half-time to level the scores before Dixon and James Brazendale combined to send Kerai over for the winner.

They host University of Liverpool Vet School on Saturday, kick off 3pm.
