Warrington 22 Broughton Park 35

DREAMS of a cup final appearance for Warrington were brought crashing down by Broughton Park on Saturday.

Andy Roberts’ side’s defeat at Walton Lea Road denied them the chance of contesting the Lancashire Cup Final.

After the game, Roberts admitted the visitors were deserving of their victory.

“We were totally out of sorts,” he said.

“Even so, Park played very well and deserved to win.

“We wish them the best of luck in the final.”

Having lost their previous league game at Carlisle via a penalty try in extra time, it was perhaps ironic that Warrington went in front via the same method on Saturday.

On their first visit to Park’s 22, Warrington forced a penalty between the posts to give them a seven-point lead.

Park replied with a try in the corner before crossing again with a push-over effort to take the lead.

Ben Hockenhull kept Warrington in touch with a penalty, but two tries in two minutes before the break changed the complexion of the game.

Park were awarded a penalty try of their own following a high tackle and, straight from the restart, they stormed over again to ensure Warrington trailed 22-10 at the interval.

However, that was the signal for a comeback from the hosts as they roared back to level the game.

Kieron Hughes was the beneficiary of good ground made by mobile prop Chris White, who took a long pass from Tom Wood before moving the ball on for Hughes to score.

After they quickly moved up the field again, good hands spread the ball across the pitch for winger Jack Morgan to cross in the corner, with Hockenhull’s touchline conversion levelling matters.

However, Park scored two more tries and a penalty to take the game away from the hosts and end their cup dreams.

Attention turns back to the North One West on Saturday as Warrington welcome Altrincham Kersal to Walton Lea Road, kick off 3pm.
