Warrington 32 Manchester 0

COACH Andy Roberts says he has “run out of superlatives” for his Warrington side’s defence as they racked up their third straight win.

Despite being under heavy pressure during their first home game of the campaign, Warrington kept visitors Manchester off the scoresheet.

At the other end, tries from Keiron Hughes, Tom Arnold, Steve Pilkington and Jamie Roberts, plus 12 points from the boot of Ben Hockenhull, earned them a bonus-point win.

“That’s fifteen points from our past three games, which can’t be bad,” Roberts said.

“I have run out of superlatives to describe our defence and the way we took our chances was nothing short of excellent.”

After Manchester starved them of possession early, a piece of individual magic from Hughes opened the scoring.

Having received the ball just inside his own half, Hughes stepped through the defensive line before dummying his way past the cover to cross between the posts.

Hockenhull converted a penalty after Manchester strayed offside when trying to clear their lines, but the rest of the half saw Warrington repelling pressure from the visitors.

The second half continued in the same vein, but another Hockenhull penalty gave Warrington further breathing space.

Then, Nathan Beesley pounced on a Manchester error and raced away before handing onto Arnold, who finished in the corner.

Pilkington then finished off Jamie Thompson’s break as Warrington started to relax before Roberts got on the end of a set scrum move to score his side’s fourth try and secure a bonus point.

Warrington are now up to sixth in the North One West table ahead of Saturday’s trip to Carlisle, kick off 3pm.

Blackburn 2nd 31 Warrington 2nd 7

WARRINGTON had no answer to the pace and skill of Blackburn’s backs as they fell to defeat on Saturday.

Three converted tries meant the visitors were up against it and they trailed 21-0 at the break.

Blackburn added two unconverted tries to their tally in the second period, but Warrington had the final word when skipper Shaun Yoxhall scored a well-worked effort.

The team will look to bounce back when they host Sandbach on Saturday, kick off 3pm.
