Lymm 27 Cleckheaton 10

COACH Adam Fletcher thinks Lymm’s positive end to the National League Three North campaign will give them momentum when next season starts.

Lymm wrapped up their 2016/17 campaign with a comfortable win over Cleckheaton at Beechwood on Saturday, with Cormac Nolan, Lucas Titherington and Andy Davies scoring tries.

Richard McEvoy kicked five goals in Lymm’s fourth win from their final five games as they end the season in eighth place.

“Finishing eighth is not where we wanted to finish, but with all the injuries and unavailabilities we’ve had its actually not bad at all,” Fletcher said.

“It was a great end to the season with four wins from the last five games. It was important we did that as it gives us good momentum going into next season.

“There’s lots of positives to take from the season but also a load of work to do if we want to keep improving and evolving as a squad.”

Lymm flew out of the traps against their struggling visitors as a great first phase move from a scrum ended with Nolan going over.

Cleckheaton hit back with an unconverted try, but McEvoy’s penalty on the half-hour mark kept the scoreboard ticking over before a sweeping move involving Davies, McEvoy and Oli Higginson ended with a try for Titherington.

That gave Lymm a 17-5 lead at the break, but the visitors used the slope well after the interval to score another unconverted try.

However, that was as good as it got for Cleckheaton as Lymm flexed their muscles late on.

Another McEvoy penalty stretched the lead to two scores before Davies scrambled over.

Lymm could not find a fourth try to secure a bonus point and both sides ended the game with 14 men after a mass brawl, with Jordan Widdrington taking the punishment for the hosts.

Lymm: Dan Horton, Adam Bray, Nick Ashton, Joe Watson, Will Baldwin, Matty Connelly, Jake Ashall, Oli Higginson; Andy Davies, Will Titherington; Michael Floyd, Lucas Titheringotn, Richard McEvoy, Joe Denman, Cormac Nolan. Subs: Jordan Widdrington, Ali Sutherland, Rhys Jones.
