Billingham 36 Lymm 21

ADAM Fletcher’s Lymm side could not repel a Billingham comeback on Saturday as they missed the chance to improve on their mid-table position in National League Three North.

Having nudged their way into a two-point lead in the second half, thanks in no small part to a 16-point personal haul from full-back Cormac Nolan, the visitors were hit by two late tries as they fell short of making it three victories in a row.

Lymm were the first to post points as Nolan booted over a penalty before Billingham fly-half Joe Evans scored the game’s first try.

The hosts were soon back on the attack and a missed tackle allowed Dan Burns to race through, with the conversion from Daniel Finney opening up an 11-point lead.

Nolan added another penalty to reduce the gap, but the hosts were able to cross again for an unconverted score on the left wing.

Another Nolan penalty meant Lymm posted the last points of the first half and they emerged from the break with renewed vigour as they looked to close the gap.

Joe Wilson pounced on a loose ball to dive over next to the posts, giving Nolan an easy conversion to reduce the gap to three points.

It was then Nolan’s turn to cross when he good handling allowed him to beat two defenders to score in the corner but he could not add the extras.

Sadly for Lymm, this was the end of the scoring as tries from Joe and Peter Evans, plus two conversions and a penalty from Finney, sealed defeat for Fletcher’s side.

Lymm will look to bounce back on Saturday when they welcome Hull to Beechwood, kick off 2.15pm.
