Lymm 2nd 42 Preston Grasshoppers 3rd 0

DEFEAT earlier in the season proved to be the perfect motivation for Lymm’s young second string to put in a fine performance on Saturday.

After edging out Vale of Lune in their opening game of the Cotton Traders Conference B season, this result means they continue their perfect start to the campaign.

They played with power and pace early on, with newcomer Ali Sutherland proving a threat with his running game.

Rhys Jones nudged the hosts ahead with two penalties after the referee became impatient with Preston’s infringements at the breakdown.

Lymm’s attempts to force the game resulted in errors that gave Preston field position, but it was from one such attack from the visitors that Sutherland intercepted a pass and streaked away for the game’s opening try, converted by Jones.

That gave the hosts a 13-0 half-time lead, one they would only build on after the break.

From a scrum deep inside Preston territory, Ollie Lancaster released centre Mike Floyd, who beat his opposite number to charge over the line.

The hosts had to repel a period of Preston pressure before the game opened up, with Jones adding another penalty before Jorge Reynolds scored in the corner.

Sutherland sprinted home for his second try before Luke Richards showed good footwork to cross from 40 metres out for the game’s final try.

The second team will hope to make it three wins out of three when they travel to Firwood Waterloo on Saturday.

Lymm: L Richards, J Reynolds, R Jones, M Floyd, R Forrest; O Lancaster, T Phillips; J Harper, A Sutherland, M Hands, J Yates, H Baldwin, N Ashton, J Lewis, O Askew. Subs: D Byetheway, J Pilkington.

Lymm 4th 24 Eagle 2nd 7

LYMM’S fourth team continued their promising season in Division Five South of the North West Intermediate League with a hard-fought win over neighbours Eagle seconds.

The hosts took control early by scoring three tries to build up a 17-0 lead which proved too much for Eagle to overhaul.

The visitors did manage to get on the board as they were awarded a penalty try for an obstruction, but Lymm’s superior skills in attack won the day.

AFTER a weekend off, Lymm’s first team will look for their third win in a row on Saturday when they travel to Billingham, kick off 2.15pm.
