Birkenhead Park 55 Warrington 17

ALTHOUGH they were comprehensively outplayed in all phases, Warrington’s young side stuck to the task until the final whistle.

They could find no answer to the pace, power and weight of a well-drilled Birkenhead outfit.

“We came up against a side in top form,” said coach Andy Roberts.

“Although they had a bit of luck with their last three tries, which perhaps distorted the final score, they had the edge in all phases and were worthy winners.

"This Saturday we meet Wilmslow, who are currently fouth in the league and will certainly have a point to prove after losing to us twice last season. It should be some game.”

Although Danny Fleming surged 20 yards, ahead of good hands from the recycled ball allowing Nathan Beesley to cross in the corner, Park moved 17-5 clear.

Tom Wood delivered a double show-and-go to touch down, with Ben Hockenhull’s conversion reducing Park’s lead to five points.

Park used their heavyweight pack to rumble over again before the break, then strong running of the home backs was rewarded with two more tries.

Warrington put together their best period of continuous play and were rewarded with an excellent try from Cam Lewis before Park finished off three scores from Warrington mistakes.
