Lymm 28 Sheffield 19

LYMM climbed to third in National League Three North with victory against Sheffield on Saturday.

Coach Adam Fletcher was pleased with victory over his side's divisional rivals, but highlighted areas of improvement for the young Lymm team.

“We were not quite on it defensively but did enough to keep them out for long periods," he said.

"It wasn’t pretty, but happy days."

After three minutes Sheffield, showing real intent, released their left winger who fed number eight Jonny France to score near the posts and convert his own try.

Several phases of fast hands across the pitch saw Lymm reply, with number eight Ollie Higginson crossing on six minutes and Richard McEvoy converted from wide out to level.

More pressure gave right wing McEvoy a penalty chance on the visitors’ 22 which he duly converted.

Tom Bray, a centre by nature, at fly half began to bring out the best from his exciting but young back line.

One move released centre Richard Halford through a gap, who then sent a miss-pass to full back Joe Knowles to score, again ably converted by McEvoy after 20minutes, 17-7.

Sheffield replied to close the gap to five points at the break and missed a penalty shortly into the second half.

A 40-metre break from Halford took the play deep into the opposition’s 22 and pressure gave McEvoy another penalty chance, which he took.

Bray's clever kick to the corner was pounced on by Cormac Nolan as Lymm crossed again and despite the same man missing a penalty Lymm survived another Sheffield try.

Nolan seized the opportunity to put the game beyond the visitors late on with a penalty from inside the opposition 22.

Lymm host Huddersfield YMCA on Saturday, kick off 2.15pm.
