Firwood Waterloo 14 Lymm 22

LYMM moved to within two points of third spot in National League Three North thanks to a win at Firwood Waterloo on Saturday.

Adam Fletcher's side sit fifth with a game in hand as they prepare to host fourth-placed Sheffield this weekend.

It was Lymm's first ever win at rivals Waterloo and the visitors' pack secured early front foot ball behind which the back line played quite adventurously given the conditions.

This soon allowed Lymm a scoring chance with the ball whipped away from a scrum in Loo’s 22, but with winger Cormac Nolan free the final pass slipped forward.

However Lymm were soon rewarded for a spell of pressure that included a strong break from centre Richard Halford.

Richard McEvoy's dart resulted in a Lymm scrum and three passes after Ollie Higginson sprinted forward from number eight Joe Knowles was able to force his way over in the corner.

Lymm added a second soon after when Halford took a neat inside ball from scrum half Tom Baker to stretch over. McEvoy converted.

McEvoy then added a penalty in front of the posts.

A third try for the visitors followed after Nolan was held up short, only for young centre Callum Harris to dive by the corner and McEvoy kick the extras for a 22-0 half-time lead.

The Merseysiders responded after the interval from a clever ruck that saw a kick into space for the hosts' winger to touch down – the try was converted.

Lymm looked stuck between chasing a bonus point try or holding firm to secure their lead.

The visitors powered to within 15 metres of the Waterloo line through Adam Bray, before his short pass found an opposition forward and the hosts' loose head prop sent his winger galloping clear to add a second converted try.

But Lymm held on for the win.
