THE Cheshire Colts Cup Finals played on home turf on Sunday saw mixed results for the two Lymm teams.

Lymm's under 19s defeated Altrincham Kersal 25-18, while the under 17s fell 23-7 to Caldy.

And at Bowdon, Lymm's under 16s lost in their final 27-19 to Chester.

The early stages of the senior colts showdown were an arm-wrestle with the deadlock not being broken until the 17th minute when, utilising their powerful forwards, Lymm scored through flanker Nat Johnstone following a catch and drive.

Lymm, league champions and Raging Bull Colts League cup winners, appeared to be in control then after about 25 minutes a missed tackle on their own 22 allowed Altrincham Kersal's backs to break free.

They utilised their pace and scored the try of the match in the corner. An excellent conversion, followed by a penalty, took Lymm's old adversaries into the break 10-5 ahead.

With the wind at their backs, within minutes of the restart Lymm had eliminated the arrears when hooker Rob Makin burrowed his way over.

With their forwards now in the ascendency, a further try to Johnstone soon followed and a Mitchell penalty and Johnstone's hat-trick try seemingly had Lymm out of sight at 25-10.

However, Altrincham Kersal never gave up and a converted try, when again they capitalised on a Lymm mistake followed by a huge 45m penalty against the wind - brought them back to 25-18 and within striking distance.

A nervy last five minutes were safely negotiated and Lymm claimed their third trophy of the season.

They head off to Wharfedale on Sunday for the Cock of the North Cup Final to attempt to complete a grand slam.

Lymm hit back swiftly and took a narrow 7-5 lead with a well worked attack, finished off by the pace of Alistair Wealthall.

Despite playing against the wind Caldy had the better of the field position and regained the lead shortly before half-time with another unconverted try.

Now playing into the breeze Lymm were up against it and despite another Caldy five-pointer shortly after the break were always in the match.

Hopes of a revival ended about 10 minutes from time when Caldy collected their fourth try and then put themselves out of reach with a penalty.

Over at Bowdon, Lymm's under 16s, playing against the wind in the first half, turned round 24 points adrift to a strong Chester outfit.

Despite clawing their way back to 24-19 with tries from Alex Hull (2) and Josh Davies, as well as two conversions, a penalty goal to Chester ultimately put the match out of their reach.
