Lymm 34 Billingham 19

TWO ends of the spectrum were on show as Lymm signed off the National League Three North season in style.

England under 18s half backs Alex Mitchell and Mark Dixon played in tandem for the first time for the first XV, a culmination of over 10 years of playing together for Lymm, while Andy Rowley and Dave Williamson made their final appearances.

Rowley is retiring to take up a career in the Police and Williamson, who has probably had as many comebacks as Frank Sinatra, assures everyone he is finally hanging up his boots.

The young Lymm half backs showed a great understanding, pulling the strings.

A converted Joe Knowles try made it 7-5, then Jake Ecclestone accepted Ross White’s offload to extend Lymm’s lead by the break though that was cut to 14-12 early in the second period.

Lymm then took command with four unanswered high quality scores.

Firstly a quick tap by Mitchell and link up with Dixon saw Rowley go over.

Then the try of the game, a classic scrum-half score as Mitchell picked up from the base of the scrum on the halfway line, blistering pace and two dummies later without a hand laid on him he was over in the corner.

Rowley quickly followed up with his second score before Cormac Nolan completed a counter attack started by Tom Bray.

As ever with ninth-placed Lymm the season ends with a great spectacle of rugby and the thoughts of what might one day be, if the mid-season blues can ever be remedied.
