Sheffield Tigers 59 Lymm 15

LYMM had no answer to Sheffield’s speedy attack on Saturday, succumbing to one of their heaviest defeats in recent seasons.

They played catch-up from the moment their hosts countered to score the game’s opening try following a lineout in their own half.

Cormac Nolan’s penalty made it 5-3, preceding a spell when knock-ons by visiting players ended their most promising attacks.

A quickly-taken tap penalty caught Lymm napping as Tigers added a converted score.

An easy run-in followed a well-executed penalty 10 metres from the away team’s line, then patient running through phases created gaps they exploited to lead 24-3 at the interval.

Lymm were brighter shortly after the break, when Mark Dixon showed some clever touches and Adam Bray created some much-needed momentum for the Warrington side.

It wasn’t long though before Tigers again tore through Lymm's defence for another converted score, although Adam Bray replied with a try of his own following promising combination play by substitute George Boaden and Mark Dixon.

Dixon inspired a recovery of sorts, linking well with centre Jake Ecclestone before scoring in the corner to make it 31-15.

However the Yorkshire outfit responded with force, running riot in the closing stages amid unconvincing tackling by their guests.

A flow of tries followed, with Sheffield swelling their tally to 59.

Lymm will attempt to recover when they host Billingham in their final fixture this Saturday.

Lymm: Auden, White, Ashton, Kahui, Williams, Ashall, Mullarkey, Adam Bray, Baker, Dixon, Williamson, Tom Bray, Ecclestone, Nolan, Knowles. Replacements: Rasheed, Horton, Boaden.

LYMM kept alive their hopes of avoiding relegation on Saturday, denting their guests’ promotion bid as a result.

Richard McEvoy’s brace of opportunist tries, after the teams had traded converted scores early on, established a 21-7 lead for the hosts.

When Sam Ward outpaced the students’ defence to touch down a 50-metre try, they were favourites to win comfortably.

Liverpool reduced their arrears with two tries at the start of the second period.

McEvoy completed a hat-trick, adding a fifth of six conversion attempts, before a converted try for each side completed the scoring.
