Warrington 21 Kirkby Lonsdale 22

WARRINGTON lost out by one point in their North One West fixture on Saturday as visitors Kirby Lonsdale snatched victory with a last minute try.

The first quarter saw both sides competing in an open contest and the scores remained level until the hosts forced a penalty on the Kirkby 22, which was converted by Pat Roberts.

Kirkby scored the opening try 10 minutes later and despite being pegged back by another Roberts penalty, the visitors increased their lead with another try moments before the break.

Warrington finally opened their try account in the second period when a reverse pass from Tom Wood found second row Zak Lythgoe who threaded through a gap to score.

The visitors again caught Warrington on the break with a 50-yard run to score in the corner, but quick-fire Warrington tries from Wood and youngster Nathan Beasley looked to have grabbed a hard-fought victory.

With Warrington four points ahead in the last minute, Kirkby delivered a killer blow with the winning try.

“This game could have gone either way,” said coach Andy Roberts.

“Perhaps Kirkby were a little lucky with two of their scores but their defence was absolutely superb, bearing in mind that we starved them of possession.”

Aldwinians 2nd 19 Warrington 2nd 5

WARRINGTON seconds struggled to come to terms with the boggy conditions at Aldwinians on Saturday as they suffered defeat in the Standish Media Services Division One.

The home side’s forwards steam-rollered the younger, lighter Warrington pack to claim their first victory in five games.

Aldwinians immediately took advantage with a try from a driving maul and held a 12-0 half-time lead.

Warrington cut the deficit when replacement Pat Massey found a patch of dry land to cut through the defence after Wood’s break.

Aldwinians had the last word, using their forward power to score.

“I am sure we’ll be back to top form for our derby game against Lymm on Saturday,” said stand-in skipper Richard Turner.
