Lymm 24 Cleckheaton 30

LYMM proved their own undoing against Cleckheaton on Saturday as simple mistakes cost them points in the National League Three North encounter.

A hat-trick of tries for Dave Williamson and a score for Tom Baker proved too little for the hosts.

Captain Sion Williams said: “We must make sure these silly, simple errors don’t become a habit. I am very disappointed but we will get back on the training pitch and put it right.”

Full back Williamson ran the ball back with intent from the Lymm half after five minutes and eventually ended up on the end of a move that put him over in the corner. Cormac Nolan could not convert.

The visitors replied on 17 minutes with an unconverted score and found themselves ahead after another rolling maul proved successful.

Lymm replied when Williamson latched onto Nolan’s chip through to add his second, but the hosts were behind again before the break after Cleckheaton crossed for a converted try.

Number eight Adam Bray was yellow carded after the interval for a deliberate knock on, but after good work from the forwards Lymm secured an attacking lineout and gave scrum half Baker the chance to level the scores.

However, when Baker left the field with a shin injury, Cleckheaton began to impose themselves and edged in front with a try, followed by a drop goal.

Giles Dugdale knocked on close to the line as Lymm searched for a response and when Williamson sealed his hat-trick, converted by Nolan, they were back within one point.

It would be the visitors who added the final score of the game, albeit hanging on when Lymm kicked late on instead of running the ball.
