WARRINGTON'S opening game of the season was one to be forgotten as they were well beaten 25-8 at Broughton Park in rugby union's North One West on Saturday.

Head coach Darren Abram fielded a young side, a decision which looked to be paying off as his team got on top in the first 20 minutes.

However, they could not convert their chances into tries and Park came back, eventually forcing a lineout 10 yards from Warrington's line and resulting in Park’s left winger crossing for the opening try.

Warrington converted a penalty via the boot of Luke Wood but some more pressure from the home side saw them score a penalty of their own before another try sent them in 15-3 to the good at the break.

Park steamed ahead in the second half and the game was soon over at 25-3 before Warrington showed good character to get their only try through Kieran Hughes.

The try came when full back Luke Wood’s kick to the corner seemed destined for touch until it bounced back into play from the corner flag and Kieran Hughes was on hand to claim the rewards.

Despite the loss, Warrington head coach Darren Abram was pleased with the way his young players handled themselves.

Abram said: "I am very pleased at the way the young lads performed.

“But a loss is a loss and we have a lot of work to do before we travel to Widnes on Saturday.”
