Widnes 2nd 8 Warrington 2nd 26

WARRINGTON'S second string gained some revenge for the first team’s narrow defeat at Widnes the week before with this comprehensive victory.

The win keeps them in fifth position with one game in hand over Firswood Waterloo, who are four points ahead.

After an arm-wrestling, opening 15 minutes, Warrington took the lead when they recycled the ball from a set scrum and Craig Byrne once more demonstrated his tackle-busting power to touch down from 15 yards.

Andy Almond converted.

Warrington increased their lead ten minutes before half time when Cameron Lewis scooted over and Andy Almond converted.

Widnes came back briefly in the second period with an unconverted try and a penalty but Warrington closed off the game when Tom Arnold picked up a clever chip from Luke Wood and outpaced the defence to score in the corner.

The result was sealed when Rockey Turner finished off a forward drive by picking up a yard out and placing the ball firmly under the posts to allow Almond a simple final conversion.

“Another good all-round performance,” said coach Stewart Coleman. "With excellent contributions from the two young flank forwards Pete Edwards and Jonny Evans.

“We are now looking forward to our cup tie against Lymm next week.”
