Warrington Sports Personality Unsung Hero of 2003 - Percy Mason
A NEW nomination category was unveiled at Warrington Sports Personality of the Year awards in 2003 that acknowledges those whose efforts take place behind the scenes but still enhances the greater good of their sport.
Percy Mason was the proud recipient of the event's first Warrington Sports Personality Unsung Hero award.
The 90-year-old has dedicated himself to swimming coaching in the town for decades and has held numerous high-ranking positions at swimming associations located across the region.
Upon receiving his award, Percy made a highly eloquent speech and said he felt guilty to accept the award, as he didn't feel he deserved it.
"I won a special award ten years ago so I feel I can't be called an unsung hero, but this is a wonderful gift to have and I hope it is not a parting one," he said.
Percy added: "I have had a magnificent evening and thoroughly enjoyed this wonderfully organised event. This evening has proved to be a highlight of the year and I feel very humbled to be recognised for this award."
Percy has no plans to retire and will continue to work in conjunction with swimming clubs in the area such as Fordton, Great Sankey, Broomfields and Woolston.
He said: "I couldn't possibly retire now. There's so much to do and I'm looking forward to the challenges that the year brings."
