Warrington Disabled Sports Personality of 2003 – Aden Walker
4:10pm Monday 18th September 2006 in Sport By Mike Parsons
THE biggest cheer of Warrington Sports Personality's presentation dinner event was given to thrilled disabled award winner Aden Walker.
In his excitement the swimmer ran to the stage to collect his glistening array of prizes and tuned out an impromptu rendition of Oggy, Oggy, Oggy' that gained the response of an admiring audience.
He went on to say: "I've won 143 medals in my swimming career so far but, hey, I haven't finished yet. I'm off to Germany in June for a swimming event and then after that I will be off to Edinburgh to represent the north west."
Morrisson's supermarket employee Aden, who is 33 years old and has learning disabilities, won Special Olympics gold medals in America and Monaco during 2003 as well as raising £685 for charity through his swimming.
Aden, who lives in Great Sankey, said: "I love swimming because it keeps me healthy. I have asthma and the swimming does my lungs good.
"I've been racing since I was a kid and my mum takes me to all the events. My family and friends are very supportive.
"And if it wasn't for the support of people in Warrington, then people with disabilities would not be able to take part in sport. I thank them for that, it's a good town to live in."
Aden's prize, in association with Families United: Super League match day experience and season ticket courtesy of Warrington Wolves; £50 cash thanks to Warrington Guardian; £25 voucher provided by Simon One Sport; bottle of champagne courtesy of Bargain Booze, Chester Road, Warrington; An Asics radio, water bottle, Timex watch, towel and courier bag donated by Asics UK; 12 months subscription to Ultra-Fit Magazine; one month's membership of David Lloyd Leisure, Warrington; a trophy.
