TALENTED young stars received their Warrington Sports Personality of 2008 awards at a presentation ceremony staged at The Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Athlete Sam Dykes, all-rounder Danielle Collier, the Lymm under nines rugby union team and the Warrington Girls under 14s and under 16s rugby league sides were selected for recognition by the judges from high achievers nominated by readers of Warrington Guardian and  warringtonguardian.co.uk.
The 16th Warrington Sports Personality of the Year, organised by Warrington Guardian and sponsored by World of Beds, will also include a senior presentation night at the venue on January 30, with six more awards to be handed out.

Wolves ace Michael Monaghan joined Rob Lowe, the Warrington depot manager of event sponsors Howdens Joinery Co, in presenting prizes donated by LA Bowl, Delta Force, The Co-operative Insurance, Warrington Wolves and Howdens Joinery to the junior winners.

Monaghan, a former NRL Grand Finalist with Manly in his native Australia, was impressed with the array of talent and silverware on show.

“It's good to see from this event there are so many kids playing sport and in a variety of sports too,” said the 28-year-old.
“Some of the youngsters who collected Warrington Sports Personality awards are probably at the stage where I was when I was their age and dreaming of playing sport as a profession.

“Rugby league was my chosen sport and hopefully they can go on to achieve their goals in their sports.

“If they don't, it's still a good way to keep fit and promote a healthy lifestyle.”


The winners of the Warrington Sports Personality Under 11s Team of 2008 award, Lymm Rugby Club under nines squad, triumphed at seven mini-rugby festivals during the year, including Wales' largest junior rugby festival with unfamiliar Welsh rules.

Another highlight was beating all the teams in the county to win the prestigious Cheshire competition.
All of that success was built on top of winning the Wilmslow, Cheshire, Bahrain and Manchester Festivals in the 2006/07 season.

Danielle received her honour in the Warrington Under 11s Sports Personality of 2008 category.
In gymnastics, she represented Cheshire and Merseyside and came second on the beam in a north west competition.

And in trampolining, she qualified at level four and finished fourth in a North West Grades event.
Danielle was also part of the Galaxy Flyers cheerleading team that came third in the Nationals event and first at the Future Cheer competition.

On top of that she helps out with pre-school gymnasts on a Saturday, Teenies cheer teams on a Sunday and gym development squads on a Tuesday.
Danielle does all that while maintaining her school work and having been diagnosed with Osgood Schlatters in both knees, which causes her discomfort when taking part in sports.
The judges had an unenviable task in selecting winners from the quality nominations and particularly so in the under 16s team category.
Therefore, they settled on a joint award to the Warrington Girls under 14s and under 16s rugby league teams after both enjoyed sealing triple glory for the town.

They won every competition they entered, including two at national level.

Double victory in the Northern Rail Cup finals in July was followed up with further jubilation in the North West League and then in the Champion of Champions competition - the UK's premier trophy for league winners.
Topping off the year, the under 16s also became the first girls' rugby league squad to tour Australia.

Under 16s team captain Emily Rudge represented the senior England women's team in the World Cup in Australia and Jodie Cunningham was named the North West player of the Year.
Sam received the Warrington Under 16s Sports Personality of 2008 honour.

He enjoyed a dominant season at his age group in athletics, finishing the year ranked as the fifth fastest in the UK at 800m.

Sam, unbeaten at all distances in the National Young Athletes League, won the Cheshire Schools Championship at 800m in record time.

He also won the Cheshire 400m title.

The Warrington Athletics Club star also won the 400m and 800m titles at the Northern England Championships.
And even better than all that, Sam was glorious in the English Schools Championships – bringing the 800m title back to Warrington.
