THE recent heatwave may have been welcomed by many sun worshippers up and down the country but fish located in shallow, sheltered water are exposed to conditions that often lead to fatalities.
During hot weather, water is capable of holding less dissolved oxygen than at cooler temperatures and, if a water has large numbers of fish, organic wastes or aquatic plants, the oxygen levels can plummet dangerously.
Unfortunately, this has been the case on three Lymm Angling Club venues in the last week. Founders Pool, Belmont Pool and Grimsditch Mill Pool all suffered fish losses.
Only Belmont Pool was closed to angling during this period but members are advised to check the website and local signs before fishing as the situation is volatile and can change on a daily basis.
The club would like to thank Mark Edwards for his prompt action in notifying the Environment Agency and ask all members to be extra vigilant for similar problems during the summer months.
Waters that were unaffected by the oxygen problems fished very well over the past week.
Whitley Pool has been producing hundreds of quality crucians and brown goldfish to over 3lbs and carp of all variants and colours.
The carp here average just over 10lbs in size and are plentiful, offering good sport throughout the day.
Over at Village Pool, larger than average skimmer bream have been dominating catches, backed by carp to 15lbs and roach over 1lb.
More than 1,000 fish fell to anglers baits at Woodside Pool last week, with carp in the 6lbs to 7lbs range showing well, along with crucians and rudd.
Walk Mill Pool is its consistent self, with small rudd taking baits willing on the drop. Tench, crucians and large roach and rudd are quickly picking up any feed that manages to reach the bottom.
A recent match on the venue saw many anglers weighing in double-figure bags of fish.
Lymmvale has been fishing steadily, with some good bags of tench and large carp falling to boilie fished in conjunction with small amounts of free offerings.
One angler was lucky enough to land five barbel in a session here, a most unusual feat.
The River Severn continues to produce some excellent shoals of barbel for those who manage to locate the river’s shoals.
A mobile approach is recommended until the bites start coming, then it’s just a question of sitting there and hanging on.
