GLAZEBURY Cricket Club's unexpectedly slow start to the new season continued with a draw at Rostherne in Cheshire Cricket Alliance Division Two on Saturday.

Glazebury restricted last year's Division Three champions to 38 for 1 from their first 20 overs but the hosts battled on to make 177 for 8 despite 4 for 36 from Jon Gibbons and 2 for 24 from Dave Acton.

Glazebury initially struggled in their reply, with Dave Mason the only man to find fluency with 22 runs.

But David Gibson then crafted a fine 44 and, although Glazebury never looked like winning, they held out for a draw on 137 for 8.

Glazebury's second team drew at home to Appleton's seconds in Division Three.

Both sides were promoted last season and Glazebury made 140 for 8 in their innings at Hurst Lane thanks to 40 from opener Wayne Hargreaves and 50 from Callum Morgan.

Ed Pugh took 4 for 16 for Appleton, who set off well in their run chase with Paul Dempster making 52.

But Appleton began to struggle after losing their first four batsmen and, with Hargreaves grabbing 4 for 31 and Julian May recording figures of 3 for 19, the match was finely balanced going into the final over.

Appleton needed four runs to win with two wickets left but lost one wicket and could only muster one run as the match finished as a draw.

Glazebury's first team entertain Norbury on Saturday, while the second team travel to Audlem and the Sunday team hosts Leyland in the West Lancashire League.
