WOOLSTON Rovers interim head coach Mal Holt feels a standard was set in the 16-0 home win against Dewsbury Celtic.

A similar effort, especially in defence, would serve his team well in Cumbria this weekend, he says.

“It was a great effort but we now need to back that up with a win at Millom,” said Holt, whose side would leap above their fifth-placed Kingstone Press National Conference League Division Three hosts with a win.

“We know that they have been playing well over recent weeks but we will be going into this game full of confidence.

“The way we played, especially with our defensive display, is now a benchmark that we need to aspire to reach each week and if we can repeat that then we will give ourselves a great chance of coming away with the right result.”

The coach to Millom leaves Monks Sports Club at 10am on Saturday for any supporters wishing to travel. Call Nikki Whalley on 07889 170895 to book seat.

ROVERS produced their best performance of the season to date to defeat Dewsbury at Monks Sports Club.

Two tries in eight minutes at the tail end of the game, reward for sterling resistance work to keep Celtic at bay, earned Mal Holt’s boys two valuable league points

Scrum half Conner Muir slipped centre Tom Woodward over in te first half.

Eleven minutes from time Theo Holt and Muir combined for substitute Niall Toher to cross and Lewis Hoarty converted.

Harry Files made sure of victory when he got on the end of good work from Daniel Markham and Ryan Brown.

On a further positive note, winger Kieran Jones stepped up from the under 18s and acquitted himself well to take the man-of-the-match award.

He was well supported by Toher, Files, Holt and Jack Sherratt.

“We produced a perfect defensive display throughout,” said Mal Holt.

“In the last 15 minutes our fitness and pace allowed us to dictate and move clear.”

“This was a massive game for us and puts us back into the play-off places.

“The next few games see us play other teams around us so a couple of wins will see us jump a few more places up the table.”
