Woolston Rovers A 26 Burtonwood Bridge 12

A STORMING second-half display proved there was very little ring rust for Woolston Rovers A despite a five-week break from action.

They saw off neighbours Burtonwood Bridge at Monks Sports Club on Thursday night to remain unbeaten in North West Men’s League Division Three.

The game was tight in the first half, with Conner Muir and Daniel Markham going over for the hosts early on before Oli Morrissey’s try, converted by Greg Peters, saw Bridge trail 8-6 at the break.

However, two Sean Millington tries just after the break put Woolston in command before Callum Moore and Niall Toher crossed to put the game out of Bridge’s reach.

Ross Young scored a late consolation for Burtonwood, but it was Woolston who took the local bragging rights.

“It has been a frustrating time for us not having played for so long, so for us to put in a performance like that was very pleasing,” Rovers A coach Andy Penny said.

“Burtonwood are a very good side and we knew that we would have to be at our best to get the result so I am absolutely made up with the lads.”

Rovers are third in the division, with Bridge one place and four points further back.

“I saw enough there tonight to know that we are going to be ok,” Burtonwood coach Lee Cunningham said.

“If we replicate that effort and attitude every time we train or play, we are going start making those needed improvements sooner rather than later.”
