Billinge 2 New Street 0

IN the Warrington and District Football League’s flagship cup final, Billinge saw off New Street to claim the Guardian Cup on Bank Holiday Monday.

Ryan McCabe and Steve Taylor were on target for the St Helens-based Cheshire League Premier Division outfit as they had too much for their derby opponents, who ply their trade in the Warrington and District League’s top flight.

In front of a good crowd at Warrington Town’s Cantilever Park ground, the sides struggled with the hot conditions for the first half-hour.

However, it was Billinge who adapted quickest and got their noses in front when a right-wing cross found the head of McCabe, who made no mistake.

New Street were shell-shocked and found themselves further behind just two minutes later as Taylor curled home a shot with help from the post.

Needing a response, New Street were on the front foot after the break but struggled to create chances against a stubborn Billinge defence.

Indeed, they left themselves open to the counter-attack and Billinge were only prevented from adding a killer third goal by some fine goalkeeping.
