Barrow Island 32 Woolston Rovers 10

AFTER travelling to Cumbria with just 14 players, a depleted Woolston Rovers side returned to Warrington empty-handed.

John Fieldhouse’s side were up against it from the start as Blain Marwood, twice, and Dan White gave the hosts a 16-0 half-time advantage.

That was extended when Ian Irvine crossed before Luke Walker got himself over the line to get Rovers on the board.

Two quick tries from home winger Ben Garner killed the game off, but Woolston had the last laugh through a Wil Maudsley try converted by Glyn Roberts.

“I cannot fault the effort of each of the lads but our execution needed to be a lot better,” head coach Fieldhouse said.

“We showed no respect for the ball in the first half, and the low completion rate meant that Barrow Island were able to take control.

“Even though we only went with 14 men, we should still have done better in that opening 40 minutes.

“We improved after the break but the damage had already been done.”

Rovers will look to bounce back when they travel to Oldham St Annes on Saturday, kick off 2.30pm.

KIERAN Jones ran in four tries as Woolston Rovers a continued their unbeaten start to the North West Men’s League Division Three season.

Matt Clarke also scored twice in a game Rovers dominated from the midway point of the first half, with Declan Leonard, Niall Toher and Callum Moore also getting on the scoresheet.

Billy Maunder weighed in with six conversions as the visitors racked up their fifth consecutive win in 2018.

“I am really pleased once again with the win,” head coach Andy Penny said.

“Although we were a little below the level we have been at, we still produced some great rugby especially in the last twenty minutes when we ran in five tries.

“We had a number of changes this week, but the boys that have come in have done really well and it gives me a great selection headache for next week.”
