WARRINGTON Wolves Volleyball Cub are on the rise.

With four competitive adult teams and an ever expanding junior section the club are in good shape.

Junior head coach Paul Bedworth, who has been involved in the town’s volleyball clubs for more than 30 years, is among a group of volunteers making things happen.

Bedworth, operations director for Operational UK at Daresbury scientific park, is also involved with North West Volleyball Association taking two regional teams of under 15s and under 17s boys to a national event – including Warrington Wolves players.

“In the past, there was no volleyball scene for children in Warrington outside of a couple of schools,” said the 48-year-old.

“But we’ve had 80 kids pass through the junior club over the past six years and we’ve currently got 24 attending regularly at Orford this season.”

Bedworth first began playing the sport with Warrington Volleyball Club and then helped create Bridgewater Diamonds Volleyball Club, which he was involved with for 20 years.

In 2012, Diamonds merged with the Warrington Wolves Foundation and formed Warrington Wolves Volleyball Club, which promotes the sport to men, women and children over the age of 11 years.

Matches and training sessions are held on Sundays and Tuesdays at the Orford Jubilee Hub.

“This development with Warrington Wolves Foundation, North West Volleyball Association and Volleyball England is really helping to promote the sport locally and regionally,” he said.

“It’s a great programme which takes kids at grassroots level and gives them the opportunity to play at higher levels.”

He added: “There’s been a drive to develop a training camp for under 15s and under 17s boys.

“The North West Volleyball Association has appointed Phil Chanin and Lois Best to drive the new training and initiate, with support from other coaches and helpers from local clubs.

“We are aiming to attend a national contest in Kettering in May with under 15s and under 17s boys. It’s a great development, and we have five of our Warrington Wolves lads involved.”

Bedworth added: “Adult volleyball is also enjoying success at Warrington Wolves Volleyball Club.

“Our three men’s teams are performing well in Merseyside leagues.

“Team A have been top of the league, Team Wires have topped the second division and Team Wolfpack are hunting the second-place spot.

“Our ladies team are also fighting for top spot in the Merseyside League’s second division.”
