FORMER Cardinal Newman High School student James Guy got his Commonwealth Games off to a good start with a bronze medal in the pool.

Guy, a winner of two gold medals at last year's World Championships and two silvers at the 2016 Olympic Games, claimed third place in the 400m freestyle on Australia's Gold Coast.

The former Warrington Sports Personality award winner led for much of the race, but home favourite and Olympic champion Mack Horton came through to claim the gold medal.

Horton's compatriot Jack McLoughlin took the silver medal.

Guy, who also attended Our Lady's Catholic Primary School, is expected to be a strong medal contender in the 200m freestyle and will also line up in the 100m and 200m butterfly events as well as three relay races.
