Altrincham Kersal 14 Warrington 3

ANDY Roberts says his Warrington side must adapt to conditions that do not suit them after a fourth loss on the bounce.

Ben Hockenhull struck Warrington’s only points via a penalty as their descent from a play-off chasing team to one struggling in mid-table continues.

Roberts’ side have no game on Saturday and he believes the break has come at the right time for his side as they look to arrest their decline.

“Obviously, heavy grounds and wet conditions don’t suit our style of rugby,” he said.

“However, to succeed in this league we’ll have to learn.

“We have a week off next Saturday so, hopefully, we can re-focus before we travel to Firwood Waterloo for what will be a difficult fixture.”

Once again, set scrums proved to be Warrington’s Achilles heel as Altrincham put them under pressure up front.

It was from a scrum that the deadlock was broken as quick ball allowed the home side’s lively backs to get into the action, leading to them scurrying through weak visiting defence to touch down.

Hockenhull struck back from the kicking tee to make the score 7-3 at the break and Warrington enjoyed a period of pressure after the restart, but they found no answer to the hosts’ rush defence and aggression at the break down.

The home side wrapped up victory with another converted try late on to complete another miserable afternoon for Warrington.

WILL Maudsley ran in a hat-trick as Warrington’s seconds romped to victory against their Crewe and Nantwich counterparts.

Maudsley, Nick Pennington and Sam Bennett had already crossed for the hosts before the visitors were reduced to 14 men by a head injury, meaning Warrington were able to stretch out further.

Tony Fretwell and Maudsley’s second score made it 31-0 at the break before Warrington centre Dan Griffiths volunteered to switch sides to make the contest more even.

The visitors did get themselves on the scoreboard, but Maudsley was able to complete his treble before Pennington and Mark Tickle put the icing on the cake.

THE two Lancashire Cup finalists showcased their full squads over three games and it was Warrington who came out on top.

The home side came out on top in all three games, with plenty of eye-catching tries scored on either side.

Leo Zheng, Charlie Bancroft, Jude Lightfoot, Will Constantinou, Owen Hemmings and Nathan Bass were all on the scoresheet for Warrington.
