WARRINGTON Athletics Club looks to have a new star in the making in the shape of Ashley Nemits.

The under 15s runner is already ranked number one in the UK for indoor 300m times in her age group, but she conquered a new distance on Sunday.

She travelled to the Sheffield Festival indoor open meeting and stormed to victory in her 400m race, clocking 60.08secs.

Her time was even more remarkable considering it was her debut over 400m.

This completes a superb start to 2018 for Appleton’s Nemits, who attends Bridgewater High School and is coached at Warrington AC by Trevor Painter.

Both of her times have been set in the past three weeks and she will now be looking ahead to more success for the remainder of the year.

Elsewhere, several of Nemits’ Warrington clubmates were in Leeds for the North of England Cross Country Championships on Saturday.

The club’s highest finisher was Lauren Ferris, who came 14th in the women’s under 20s race as she completed the course in 24mins 57secs at Harewood House Estate.

Rachel McQuillan was 53rd in the same race, stopping the clock at 29mins 33secs.

Orla Gregory put in a superb performance to place 24th in the girls’ under 13s race with a time of 12mins 23secs.

She led the Warrington team to 14th place, with clubmates Molly Wormald (100th), Maisie Bell (112th) and Lucie Davies (127th) completing the scoring.

Close behind those four were Eva Ferris (137th), Emily Entwistle (140th) and Amelia Smithers (180th).

In the boys’ race, Erik Marshall ran well to finish 47th in 11mins 57secs, with Reece Connell coming home 159th.

The boys’ under 15s race saw Joel Birchall finish 85th in 15mins 49secs, just 16 seconds ahead of clubmate Isaaq Ataullah, who came 99th.

Having just recovered from illness, Joe Buckley was the first of Warrington’s contingent in the men’s under 17s race to finish, clocking 22mins 9secs to come home 33rd.

Jack Wadsworth was 58th in 22mins 57secs, with Charlie Turnbull 96th in 25mins 1sec.
