BAYODE Oluleye retained his English elite lightweight title in Phoenix Fire Amateur Boxing Club’s final show of 2017.

The 19-year-old from Callands earned a unanimous points victory over Stockbridge’s Jake McCarthy in an absorbing main event at Eagle Sports and Social Club, scoring continuously with some effective attacks and counter-attacks.

Youth female fighter Jessica Wrighton also impressed, winning her 56kg fight against Aston’s Nimco Ali via split decision after the judges rewarded her higher work rate.

Luke Turner won the boxer of the evening award after an impressive win over Jay Warden of Moss Side Champs Camp.

Some quality combinations from the 13-year-old earned him a unanimous points victory, while brother Harvey also scored a victory by beating Blaze Harcourt, of Coastal ABC in Morecambe.

Another victor by unanimous decision was Freya Littlemore, who got the better of Sale West ABC’s Maddison Byrne, but junior debutant Ethan Owen could consider himself unlucky to lose a close split decision to Ancoats’ Harley Longden.

The tournament was the eighth and final fight night hosted by Phoenix Fire in 2017, with more dates in the pipeline for the new year.
