CHRIS Connell picked up a rod he had last used more than a quarter of a century earlier for a session at Worthington Lakes.

His old Shakespeare Graphite Glass Dennis White Clubman waggler, which he bought from George’s Tackle on Frog Lane with money earned from delivering newspapers, has had a refit.

Coupled with his classic Mitchell Match reel, and using a slider float set-up, he varied baits between caster, worm, maggot, and pinkie to catch some quality perch and roach.

He returned on Tuesday, and used casters to land some more roach and perch.

On Saturday, I took fellow committee member Ade Green for a stick-float session on my favourite stretch of the River Dee at Worthenbury.

I gave him the best swim, from where he managed a couple of grayling in the first hour.

We moved swims, leapfrogging each other to find fish.

Bingo! Ade had four grayling in quick succession and, like a true angler, let me know.

I ended up with lucky-for-some 13 fish, a trout and a dozen grayling while Ade won the day with two trout and 17 grayling.

We both fished the stick-float and fed hemp and bronze maggot.

It wasn’t record-breaking, but we enjoyed it nonetheless.

A heavy frost on Monday morning put paid to any chance of decent weights in our disabled and over 60s match on the Bridgewater Canal at Preston Brook.

Roy Rogers put his practice at the venue to good use, fishing pole and bread punch to net small roach in a winning weight of 0-12-4.

Arthur Plumb was a victor on his first visit to the River Mersey this season on Sunday, edging out organiser Ray Boden.

Fishing bolo and maggot, he put 6-5-0 of roach and perch on the scales to take the win.
