VETERAN athletes are celebrating gold medal successes this week.

Steve Watmough finished first in the over 55s section of the British Masters Championships, run in conjunction with the Chester Half Marathon.

Watmough completed the tough course, which included a ‘leg killer’ finish on the muddy grass of Chester Racecourse, in 2hrs 45mins 53secs which placed him 47th overall.

In the over 60s age group Mervyn Ward finished 521st overall in 3hrs 26mins 35secs, which placed him 11th in the British Masters.

The weekend’s second gold medal winner was David Gill in the Northern Masters 10,000m Championships at Ashton-under-Lyne.

He took the over 55s prize in style, with his time of 36mins 15secs being his fastest over the distance in this age group.

Meanwhile, Jack Green came home 24th in the Cheshire Half Marathon in Northwich, clocking 1hr 28mins 12secs.
