FORMER Warriors of Warrington swimmer Kathleen Dawson has been named in Scotland’s squad for next year’s Commonwealth Games.

The 20-year-old, who now swims for University of Stirling, will compete at the Games for the second time on Australia’s Gold Coast.

Dawson, a former Great Sankey High School student, came fourth in the 50m backstroke race and fifth as part of the 4x100m medley relay team in Glasgow.

In her first ever World Championships in Budapest over the summer, Dawson reached the 100m backstroke final, finishing seventh, and formed part of the 4x100m medley team that finished eighth.

Before that, she took home two silver medals from the British Championships in the 50m and 100m backstroke races.

Joining Dawson in Australia will be former Cardinal Newman High School pupil and fellow swimmer James Guy, who has been named in the England squad.

Guy, who picked up a medal in each colour in Budapest, is also competing in his second Commonwealth Games and will hope to improve upon the bronze medal he won in the 400m freestyle race in Glasgow in 2014.

“It is an honour to be selected to compete for Team England, something special could happen at the 2018 Commonwealth Games,” he said.

“The Games is another chance to get used to being in a village environment, to get some sun on the Gold Coast, and a great opportunity to race on the other side of the world.”
