Woolston Rovers A 40 Westhoughton Lions 20

JOINT-COACH Andy Penny says he “could not have dreamt about” Woolston Rovers A’s ‘Grand Slam’ of trophies.

Having already secured the North West Men’s League Division Four title, their victory over Westhoughton Lions on Saturday secured the play-off trophy.

The team have also won the NWML Shield and the Warrington Alliance Cup this year, meaning they have been victorious in every competition they have entered.

“This has really put a big cherry on the top of what has been an unbelievable season,” said Penny, whose side will play in Division Three next year.

“When Steve Moore and I took over the side at the beginning of the season, we could not have dreamt that we would be victorious in every competition we entered.

“I cannot praise the players enough for the way they have bought into what we have been coaching them.

“We can only put the plans in place, it is the lads that have to go out onto the field every week and perform and they have done exactly that.

“To finish the year with all four trophies is absolutely awesome and is testament to the whole squad.”

Rovers flew out of the traps in Saturday’s final at Pilkington Recs, with tries from Niall Toher, Kieran Jones, Billy Maunder and Patryk Mazur giving them a 22-0 lead.

Jimmy Haydock got Westhoughton on the board before the break and that proved the spark for a brief comeback in the second half.

Taylor Hyland scored twice to reduce the lead to eight points, but Rovers kicked on again from there.

Liam Sullivan finished off Craig Rigby’s break to easy any nerves before Mazur crossed for a second time, racing home from 50 metres after being sent through by Kieran Moore’s short ball.

Matty Meehan pulled a try back for the Lions, but Woolston fittingly provided the final score when Adam Files went from dummy-half to cross the whitewash.
