Woolston Rovers 12 Dewsbury Celtic 28

A BELOW-PAR display meant Woolston Rovers finished their regular season campaign on a sour note.

They now face an away trip in the National Conference League Division Three play-offs, with Dewsbury Moor Maroons or Eastmoor Dragons providing the opposition.

Ryan Brown and Cameron Davies were on the scoresheet for Rovers, but head coach John Fieldhouse was left unimpressed by his side’s efforts.

“That performance was not what we have come to expect and accept over the past couple of months,” he said.

“We went into the game full of confidence but failed to manage the conditions and fair play to Dewsbury, who did the basics right and got the result.

“We wanted to go into the play-off games on a winning run but that is not the case now.

“Hopefully this will be a wakeup call for us and we can knuckle down over the next two weeks.”

Dom Senior opened the scoring for the visitors when he intercepted a loose pass to race home from 80 metres before Brown levelled up the scores by stepping over from Troy Brophy’s inside ball.

However, three tries before the interval put Celtic in control and gave them a lead they would not relinquish.

Nathan Wareing scored twice to go with a further effort from Danny Thomas to put the visitors 22-6 up at the break.

After Rovers second rower Sean Conway was sin-binned for persistent offending, Paul Foulstone dummied his way over from close range to put Celtic in complete command.

Davies ensured Rovers had the final word, latching onto a loose ball after Connor Muir’s kick was batted back by Matt Davy, but that was not the end of the action.

Conway and Celtic prop Matt Ginnelley were both sent off for fighting, meaning both sides finished with 12 men.
