THEY had already won their league title, but Woolston Rovers under 13s can now celebrate a memorable double.

Saturday’s 20-10 victory over their Wigan St Patricks counterparts meant they could add North West Counties Shield to the Division Three title they had already won.

Tries from Jack Darbyshire, Spencer Richardson and Christian Piazza gave Rovers a 14-0 lead at the break, with Ashley Barnes adding a further score after the interval.

Jack Bailey kicked two conversions as Rovers held off a late rally from their opponents to secure a well-deserved victory at Golborne Parkside.

Lyndsay Darbyshire, the team’s manager, says their success this season is “nothing short of a miracle.”

“Today has really capped off an unbelievable year for the side,” she said.

“I cannot thank the players, coaches and everybody else involved for all pulling in the same direction to get where we are.

“To come from where we were in pre-season being low on numbers to then going unbeaten to win the league title and now claiming the NWC Shield it is nothing short of a miracle.

“It has been an unforgettable season and I am sure that we have put a lot of smiles on many people’s faces over the past seven months.

“Hopefully we can build on this success and move forward even further next season.”
