Burnage 31 Warrington 34

WARRINGTON held off a spirited Burnage fightback to record their first victory of the North One West season.

The visitors led 22-0 after a blistering start, but the hosts fought back and Andy Roberts’ side had to repel heavy late pressure to hold on for victory.

Roberts commented: “Although we let Burnage come back into a game which we should have put to bed by half time, we once again showed that we have the attacking and defensive talent to have a successful season.”

In their first visit to the Burnage 22, Tom Wood’s floating ball to Max Caldwell ended with the winger passing inside to Kieron Hughes, who touched down near the posts.

Ben Hockenhull added a penalty shortly after and immediately, Wood’s short pass sent Jamie Roberts through and he handed on for Hughes to finish again.

With less than 20 minutes gone, Warrington’s lead increased again as Nathan Beesley intercepted an errant pass and sprinted home.

Burnage grabbed two converted scores either side of another Hockenhull penalty to ensure they were still in touch at half time.

The hosts started the second half well to score again just after the break, with the conversion reducing Warrington’s lead to just six points.

The visitors had to front up in defence but managed to extend their lead when a three-man tackle caught Burnage’s winger in possession, leading to Tom Arnold ripping the ball free and outsprinting the cover to touch down.

However, the hosts were not finished and two more tries saw them creep to within three points of the lead, but Warrington’s defence again held firm as they secured a bonus-point win.

Roberts’ side visit Blackburn on Saturday, kick off 3pm.

Northwich 2nd 10 Warrington 2nd 25

AFTER the first team lost at Moss Farm last week, Warrington’s seconds gained a measure of revenge by seeing off their Northwich counterparts on Saturday.

Tom Sullivan, Andy Almond, Sam Bennett and Ty Hamblett scored tries for the Walton Lea outfit.

Skipper Shaun Yoxhall said: “There were excellent individual performances from the likes of Tom Woodward and Ty Hamblett, but this was essentially a win for the whole team.”
