WARRINGTON will have two swimmers in medal contention at the World Aquatics Championships today, Tuesday.

Former Cardinal Newman High School pupil James Guy will contest the 200m freestyle final in Budapest after winning his semi-final yesterday, Monday.

The 21-year-old, who also attended Our Lady’s Catholic Primary School, qualified for tonight’s final in 1min 45.18secs, with only Great Britain teammate Duncan Scott recording a faster time in the semis.

Guy and Scott won two silver medals together at last year’s Rio Olympics in the 4x100m medley and 4x200m freestyle.

Former Stockton Heath resident Guy is already the owner of a world title over this distance having won gold in 2015 in Kazan, Russia.

Also fighting it out for a medal tonight will be former Warriors of Warrington swimmer Kathleen Dawson, who goes in the 100m backstroke final.

After finishing joint-second in her heat in a time of 59.88secs, Dawson came home third in last night’s semi final in 59.82secs.

Both swimmers’ finals will be contested in the evening session, which runs between 5.20pm and 7.50pm.
