LUCY Glover made a piece of Warrington Rowing Club history at Henley Royal Regatta on Sunday.

By competing in the final of the Princess Grace Challenge Cup, Glover became the first rower to wear the club’s colours in a final at the prestigious event.

The 18-year-old was competing in a mixed crew alongside Nottingham Rowing Club pair Kyra Edwards and Anna Thornton as well as Tideway Scullers’ Saskia Budgett.

They lost the final by 4½ lengths to a Dutch crew from Hollandia Roeiclub, but Glover and her crewmates are well on course to achieve their goal of representing Great Britain at the World Rowing Under 23s Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, later this month.

After easily beating Oxford Brookes University in Friday’s heats, the crew moved on to face Reading University in the semi finals.

Lymm High School Sixth Form student Glover and her teammates recorded a 4¾-length victory in that race to set up the final showdown with Hollandia.

Glover’s latest success comes after she won the George Innes Cup for elite single sculls on the same stretch of water at Henley Women’s Regatta last month.

She also performned superbly at British Rowing’s senior trials in May, finishing eighth against the top 15 female scullers in the country despite being the youngest entrant.

Meanwhile, Warrington Rowing Club’s under 17s boys’ quad of Tom Carroll, Conor Guerin, Matt Baguley and Alastair Eaves also tried their luck at Henley, entering the Fawley Challenge Cup for crews in the age group above them.

Having qualified via a time trial, Warrington were drawn against a strong Gloucester Rowing Club crew who had been tipped as potential finalists.

A tremendous final 200m almost saw the Warrington crew reel their rivals in, but Gloucester held on to win by three quarters of a length.
