IAN Scouler took victory in the Caldwell Cup race at Fiddlers Ferry Sailing Club on Sunday.
With the ‘Olympic’ 12-mile course being used for the first time this season, variable winds and an incoming tide made for an interesting 13-boat race.
Scouler’s Falcon-class boat ‘Redfoot’ was part of an early, four-way battle for the lead before he broke away alongside Alan Dodd’s ‘Scorcher.’
When the race was shortened due to the turning tide, Dodd crossed the line 15 seconds ahead of Scouler but the latter took victory due to its superior handicap.
The win was Scouler’s first victory of the season, with Phil Wishart’s Wayfarer-class vessel ‘Hummingbird’ coming home third as 10 boats finished the race.
